When they help

When orthotics are worth considering

They are pointless when the problem is something else, so the assessment comes first and the recommendation comes second. These are the situations where changing how the foot loads is usually part of the answer.

Heel or arch pain that keeps returningIt settles, you get active again, it comes back in the same spot.
Feet that roll in, or arches that flatten under loadVisible when you stand and when you walk, not just in a photo of your feet.
High arches that take load in two small placesThe foot behaves like a rigid lever rather than absorbing anything.
Pain that only appears at a certain distance or a certain surfaceCommon with running, see sports podiatry in Brisbane.
A job that keeps you standing on hard floorsLoad all day, in shoes chosen for a uniform rather than for your feet.

If your problem is not a loading problem, orthotics are the wrong tool and we will tell you.

Assessment first. Nothing is made before then.

The assessment

What the assessment covers

We start with a lower limb biomechanical assessment: how you stand, how you walk, what your foot, ankle, knee and hip do while you are loading them, and where you are actually sore. Then we look at what you spend your days in, because footwear does half the work of an orthotic for none of the cost.

If orthotics fit the problem, we talk through what they would be correcting, what they would not, and what else has to change at the same time, usually loading and footwear. If they do not fit the problem, we say so and treat what is actually there.

Offer terms. New patients only. Available at our South Brisbane clinic, Unit 1/1 Cordelia St, and not at Indooroopilly. It covers the initial podiatry consult, 30 minutes. No referral needed. The $0 gap applies where your private health extras cover includes podiatry and you have annual limit remaining; your fund and your remaining limit decide what you pay on the day, and it is $99 without eligible cover. We accept all health funds. Anything beyond the first appointment is quoted in the room before it happens. All prices in AUD, per appointment. If you want the figure confirmed for your fund before you book, ring (07) 2103 3978.

What they do

What orthotics are for

Plainly, and without promising you an outcome.

Addressing biomechanical imbalancesChanging how load moves through the foot and up the leg while you walk and run.
Supporting foot posture and alignmentGiving the foot a shape to work against instead of collapsing into the same position every step.
Reducing the load on the sore structureSo the tissue that is irritated gets a chance to settle while you keep moving.
Managing a foot that keeps getting the same problemUseful when the same spot keeps flaring after the same activity.

Orthotics work alongside the rest of the plan, not instead of it. What they will do for you specifically depends on what the assessment finds, which is why we do not quote a result.

Align Health Collective offers interest-free payment plans on orthotics. Ask about it at the appointment.

Questions

Orthotics, answered

How much do custom orthotics cost in Brisbane?

The price of orthotics depends on what the assessment finds, so we quote it in the room before anything is made. What we can tell you up front is the appointment: at South Brisbane the first appointment is $0 gap with eligible private health cover or $99 without, and Indooroopilly is a standard initial consult fee. Ring (07) 2103 3978 and ask.

How soon can I be assessed?

Both clinics run Monday to Friday. The online diary shows real times, so book the first one that suits or ring and ask for the soonest.

Do I need a referral for orthotics?

No. Book a podiatry appointment yourself, online or by phone.

Will the assessment hurt?

No part of it is designed to hurt. Some movements may reproduce the symptoms you came in with, which is how we find the structure that is loaded.

Can I claim orthotics on my health fund?

We accept all health funds, and consults are claimable with private health extras cover. Orthotics sit under a separate item on most extras policies, so check your limit with your fund before you commit. Interest-free payment plans are available for orthotics.

Where do I park?

Both clinics have a free parking garage, with wheelchair-accessible parking, entrance and restroom.
